Ok guys...I'm looking at buying a barrel and cutting it down to 18 or 20 inches...

I'm looking for some advice on a caliber...243, 6.8, 7mm-08 are a few calibers I'm looking at

Any other suggestions? Going to use it for hunting...mostly hogs and deer...

Thanks for any advice

Just for clarity - you want a "shorter barrelled rifle" (less than factory length, but still legal), vice a "short barrel rifle" (SBR) that requires paperwork, a wait, and fees (less than 16").

Any of the mentioned calibers will work, but if it were me, I'd do a 16 1/4" 6.8 SPC or 7mm-08. If you are going to go short, go shortest minimum + 1/4" (just because I've had people go under 16" when I asked for no shorter than 16").

All the best,
Glenn

I shoot the Encore pistol in 7mm-08 and it has plenty of knock down power for hog. It is also easy to get ammo for in several bullet weights. I love the recoil when compared to the 30-30 and 30-06 cartridges. According to M.B.s length charts, 20" is an optimum length. 18" should not be a problem either. Have not harvested a white tail with it yet, but it is a hoot when used on woodchuck. Shocked

Any thing close to the 308 in powder range is a pleasure to shoot in the shorter barrels. Right now I'm shooting a 243 and a 7mm-08 in 16.5" as pistols and they don't kick bad at all and are very accurate as well. I like the 26" heavy barrels cut down as you have a little more weight at the muzzle to keep the flip down. Good luck and have fun with it. Mike

I also vote 7mm-08. My go-to deer rifle is an 18.5" barreled .260 (thinner brother of the 7mm-08).

I have a 7-08 with a 17" barrel use it for packing in bear hunting. If you reload you can use faster burning powders to get a little velocity back but is not really needed.

Maybe you should have called it "carbine" instead of a SBR. Smile Not to be confused with an NFA weapon.

I had a 7-08 barrel shortened to 17 inches, then had it improved to match ballistics of the longer barrels. originally I made it for an xp-100, but after test firing it in rifle form, it will stay the way it is. i liked it so much in carbine form, I had a 300 savage barrel cut down to the same length and built another complete rifle, for my grandkids to use when they come in to hunt. what i learned, when chronoing, was the 7-08 lost some noticable velocity when cut down, but improving it actually made it faster than the original 22" barrel. the 300 savage lost little, so it was not needed to improve it. in the encore, for deer, hogs, etc I would think about the 338 federal. currently, barrels are being closedout and are more cost friendly, that might help off set the cost of having it shortened. also, i don't think you would see much of a velocity drop when it was cut down. good luck in your search jim

6.8 is very efficient in 16-18" barrels. I think Bellm makes a6.8 that can shoot both it and the rimmed version off 30-30 brass. I'm sure any of the makers out there can make you one. I'm sure the 7-08 will jump around more and blast more, while anything smaller bore in that 308 case gets anemic in short barrels.

How about a 7-30 Waters? I know it might not be as powerful as a 7mm-08, but it won't have as much recoil and will be a pleasure to shoot!

I bought a 20" 338 fed barrel with great reservation have always belived longer is better, just got around to shooting it this last weekend Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy is all I can say, while fire forming brass I was getting a 9" group at 300 yards 20 rounds in a 20 mph wind I'm a bigger fan of short barrels now more than ever. so much easier to handle, and just as if not more accurate, just like Bellem says cut it off!!
