Ok guys...I'm looking at buying a barrel and cutting it down to 18 or 20 inches...
I'm looking for some advice on a caliber...243, 6.8, 7mm-08 are a few calibers I'm looking at
Any other suggestions? Going to use it for hunting...mostly hogs and deer...
Thanks for any advice

Just for clarity - you want a "shorter barrelled rifle" (less than factory length, but still legal), vice a "short barrel rifle" (SBR) that requires paperwork, a wait, and fees (less than 16").
Any of the mentioned calibers will work, but if it were me, I'd do a 16 1/4" 6.8 SPC or 7mm-08. If you are going to go short, go shortest minimum + 1/4" (just because I've had people go under 16" when I asked for no shorter than 16").
All the best,
Glenn
If at first you don't succeed... buy newer / better equipment!

I had a 7-08 barrel shortened to 17 inches, then had it improved to match ballistics of the longer barrels. originally I made it for an xp-100, but after test firing it in rifle form, it will stay the way it is. i liked it so much in carbine form, I had a 300 savage barrel cut down to the same length and built another complete rifle, for my grandkids to use when they come in to hunt. what i learned, when chronoing, was the 7-08 lost some noticable velocity when cut down, but improving it actually made it faster than the original 22" barrel. the 300 savage lost little, so it was not needed to improve it. in the encore, for deer, hogs, etc I would think about the 338 federal. currently, barrels are being closedout and are more cost friendly, that might help off set the cost of having it shortened. also, i don't think you would see much of a velocity drop when it was cut down. good luck in your search jim
