Remember, YOU said they were popular. They've made the 7-30 since 1984 and still do this year, and never missed a year from then till now. They haven't made any 16's in any calber since 2003, but some were 7-30's. 21's since 84 till they quit making 21's. Even armour alloy's in 14 were made. Secondary market? You mean an auction site? POPULAR, once bought, they are kept and used. Retail: they sell as fast as they can get them in. And yes, demand is high. There was an SS 16 for sale here not long ago. NO one was interested and he pulled it. Finding a loose 16 is gonna be tough, 45-70 is about the easiest to find in 16. BUT that doesn't make em "rare", it makes em difficult to get hold of, either new or used. RARE: a caliber or configuration where production was 50 or 100. I can think of at least 30 calibers that would meet that definition. 7-30's number in the THOUSANDS, tens of thousands. Popularity, not rarity makes them hard to find (includes DEMAND).

Click on the Search button at the top. Type 7-30 Waters into the search box and change the search to the title only. You will see the three I mentioned in the Contender barrels for sale (the site name might be Encore Classifieds, but it's Encores, Contenders, etc...).

EABCO has a brand new 7-30 14" Stainless for $239 or 14" blue for $244 (Blue is more expensive - thats weird) here:

All the best,
Glenn

I called them today and both finishes are on back order with no estimated delivery date.

Okay. I know that I am all over the place on this because this is a foreign landscape to me. Am I correct in believing that a Contender can handle the 300 Whisper?

This isn't a complete list of everything that has ever been offered by everyone, but MGM's "Chamberings Available" link shows most of what is currently being offered from MGM that is considered safe by most manufacturers (there are a few exceptions from manufacturer to manufacturer). Everything in black (not blue or red) is available in the Contender / G2:

All the best,
Glenn

David White's site lists Contender safe chamberings that he'll do as well. In the "223" diameter cases from 17Mach4 to the 222rem mag (and improved), pretty much the sky is the limit. Larger diameter cases is where the contender is more sensitive to chamber pressures and need to be limited. Bellm's site has many articles discussing the what's and why's about chambering limits.
