There a few steps we should always be doing when we change out or swap barrels on these. Since they should already be unloaded, and the new barrel is as well, we may not always be conscious that there other other issues besides just the loaded/unloaded one. That has to do with preventing damage to the frame and it's components. If you're not doing EXACTLY what I'm saying, I'd highly suggest that you modify your typical routine.
1. If your gun has a manual safety (G-1 cross-bolt, swing lever hammers (G-2 also), Engage the safety device. No manual safety models pull back on the trigger guard spur and make sure there's a gap between the hammer face, and the breech.
2. remove the forend.
3. Pull back the trigger guard spur to drop the barrel
4. tap out the hinge pin and remove the barrel
5. install the new barrel and slide in the hinge pin.
6. Non manual safety and manual safety guns pullback on the trigger guard again. (this one is more important than one might think), especially the non-manual safety guns. If you have both, make it regular routine regardless of which frame you have at the moment.
7. close the action.
8. install/adjust the forend.
9. open and close a couple times to make sure everything is smooth and no forend rubbing on the frame. If not, analyze the cause and correct it. Use the "sneek" close method and pay attention to both "feel" AND sound. You should feel and hear the internal parts changing positions. The critical part being the hammer block safety. That key component is what keeps the hammer OFF the firing pins, so that the spring retracts the firing pins inside the firing pin bushing, and not sticking out past the face toward the muzzle end.
