I already have a rifle barrel in 243 and have been toying with the idea of getting a 16.25" barrel in sammme caliber. I assumme they accept the rifle forend, right? Would make a nice back up on trips, with a butt stock or pistol grip.

Anybody running one like this?

The way I understand is under 16 its a pistol and you can't shoot with a rifle stock but 16 and over you can use a pistol grip.

That is true if you have a pistol frame.

I simply think a 16" barrel with a rifle forend, pistol grip and EER scope would make a nice long range pistol.

I was also thinking about this set up but I was toying with the 24" or the 16.25" I was wondering if you put the 16.25 on a pistol frame, do you have to register it as a pistol?

Here we go again...how about this? If the law is actively trying to figure out if your Encore/Contender is registered as a rifle then you're already in a world of trouble!!!

Bottom line is do not have a rifle stock any where near your Encore/Contender unless you have a legal rifle length barrel of 16" or more. For the nit pickers out there, go with 16.2" - metal shrinks when it's cold. Also, the rifle must be at least 26" long from end to end to comply with Federal law.

Before changing the grip/stock of your Encore/Contender always (ALWAYS!!!) remove the barrel first!!!

And finally, there are some locations that limit how long a pistol barrel can be. i don't know where, but I read it on the internet

Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

Yea your right there, If their asking questions then your in trouble. I was thinking of putting the 16.25 on a regular frame and butt stock which would make the total length just over 30". My question is, is it this really worth it or should I just buy the 24" barrel and have the gun around 38" long.

Like I said I have a 24" barrel in 243. I was thinking the 16"er with a rifle forend might sit better in a rest and make a nice little whitetail handgun. I had a 15" 308 with pistol forend and had trouble with stability on sticks. I'm not concerned with the other stuff, just wondered if anyone was running a similar set up.

It is against federal law to install a barrel shorter than 16" on a frame stamped without a pistol serial number. In some states you can go through an ffl and choose to transfer as a pistol or rifle. In ca it must be a pistol serial number from the factory.
