I designed a wildcat 20 years ago, that is the best deer killer I have ever had. I wanted a 150 yard woods handgun. I got it.
After 2 years of research and developement I took a 45/70 case and blew it out and necked it down to accept 44 mag bullets. I used 44 cal contender barrels to ream out the chamber, rcbs dies, and 300 gr xtp bullets at 1750-1850 fps. Clymer made my reamer. The combination turned out to be a wicked whitetail killer , hence was named
445WWK. I use it every year and have shot many deer with it , one at 175 yards. Best thing I ever did, besides marrying my wife, in case she is reading this.

I have often considered the 45-70 for the parent case of a potential wildcat, just because of the sheer volume the case affords, but was always told that the black powder origins of the case' design provided a less than desirable web thickness and therefore the 444 marlin and 375 win were better choices.
I am really glad to see your posting and hear that somebody bucked traditional presumptions and succeeded despite all the JDJ and Bullberry followers.
I am curious tho' as to what loads that you might suggest?
Thanks, man! You get 'em!
Jimmy

I use 45.0 of IMR-4198,Fed 215, 12.5" barrel,300 XTP, I get 1750 fps in the muzzle tamer barrel and 1850 fps in straight tube @12.5".
I use a 2x leupold and it will shoot as good as you are. I have shot 1-2" groups @ 100 yards off a bench...WWKMAG

would you interested in writing an article about this with photos? I'd like to post in on the front page of the website.

Heck Mike, It sounds like your round would be plenty for elk at moderate range also and should penetrate well also, I'm guessing when you hit the whiteys with it you usually get complete pass throughs. Mike

Mike I have numerous bullets that I have found by feeling the skin on the off shoulder. Usually there is as bump and cut the bullet out, the 300 xtp is great. Mike..WWK

I also forgot to say that I get at least 5 loads per case.
With 20 rounds new brass, that is not bad.
