Hello all. I would like some feedback on 300 Whisper. I've been thinking about this caliber for a while now. I've read about it online but wanted to hear from from youns. Pros & cons. I might have a chance on one in stainless frame & stainless pistol barrel with scope.

I like the caliber, but it's been next to impossible to find ammo lately. Unless you are a reloader and can get your hands on components, I'd seriously caution your decision to get one. In a single shot, you probably wouldn't be going through as much ammo as I would in my semi-auto, but you still need ammo to shoot.

The last time I saw .300 Whisper on the shelves was last year - sometime around October / November timeframe. There was one box at Academy, but I passed on it because they were the heavier 208 grain Hornady's, and at the time, I was looking for the lighter 110 grain offerings. Hindsight 20/20 - I should have grabbed that box.

I now reload my own out of converted .223 Lake City brass, but if I hadn't stocked up late last year, I'd be out of luck. I haven't been able to find .300 Whisper or .300 AAC Blackout properly head-stamped brass (I actually shoot a AAC, but I can shoot Whispers out of it. That doesn't work in reverse though.) I have a small stash of bullets, but when those are out....

I horde my brass at the range like it was gold, because recently, it's been worth about as much (figuratively speaking) Smile

All the best,
Glenn

Thanks for the reply. I am shooting my 10in 30-30 TC well right now & I have all the reloading stuff for it.

I'd say you're better off with the 30-30, I never did understand why someone would want to shoot overly heavy bullets at such slow velocities? JMO. Mike

Well I have decided to not get the 300 Whisper. Since I already group my 10in. Contender well & it's a lot easier to find stuff to reload for it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Thanks for the input.

Mr.270win,
You'd gain a little with a 30 Herrett if your gonna use a 10" bbl.
Once you get out to 14" the 30-30 catches up.
Keep an eye out, they are commonly found on the market.
Insist on dies to accompany bbl.
Love the 30's!
Cool

Because a suppressed .30 caliber bullet out of an AR-15 platform is a super cool hog-killin' machine!

I have to admit that shooting it out of an Encore pistol or rifle is enticing to me, simply because it is "something different", but the cartridge really shines when you give AR-15 shooters a .30 caliber offering without changing anything but a barrel. All of the other AR components are used - upper, lower, BCG, magazines, etc... Other cartridges for the AR-15 require more changes. Take the 6.8 SPC for example. I like that cartridge as well, but you also have to change / modify the BCG for it, and you cannot fit as many in the magazine as you would a .223/5.56. Whereas the .300 AAC Blackout or .300 Whisper can go round for round into standard AR-15 magazines. So if I have a 30 round PMag, I can fit 30 rounds of .30 caliber goodness into the magazine.

But speaking of 6.8 SPC... I see that the OP chose "Mr. 270win" as his user name. So for him, I'd like to also recommend looking into the 6.8 SPC for a Contender (Hey, there is one in the classifieds right now! No, it's not mine.) Even though it's actually "not really", because it doesn't use the same brass, I tend to think of the 6.8 SPC as ".270 Light", since it can also use the same .270 bullets that the .270 Winchester does, as well as lighter .270 offerings. It's a great newer cartridge, and I own it in both pistol and rifle configurations for the Encore platform.

All the best,
Glenn
