I have been toying with the idea of getting a 15" barrel in 209x50 caliber for the handgun. I know TC made them at one time but I don't see to many for sale anywhere.
What would be the down side of taking a regular 26" barrel and cutting it down to 15". I know I would not have a holder for the ram rod but thats OK, what other problems might I encounter?
Thanks
Al

Al,
It wouldn't have the smooth portion up front to load easily. T/C calls it the "QLA" or Quick Load Accurizer. Other companies have different names for it, but no matter what they call it, it makes loading much easier than having lands and grooves all the way to the muzzle.

You're not going to be able to use the same amount of powder either. The recoil is probably going to be too great, and from what I've read elsewhere, the powder charge isn't completely burnt by the time it exits that half-length barrel. On some other pistols, like the CVA Optima, the max load is somewhere around 95 grains of loose powder, and even that is pushing it's limits. I think that was on Chuck Hawks website.

It's also kinda (comparatively) expensive, unless money is no object. For my money (and realize, I love my Encores), I think I'd have to buy a CVA Optima pistol for less than the cost of just the stock Encore barrel. $270 at Sportsmans Guide gets you the whole pistol: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/optima-50-cal-black-po wder-pistol.aspx?a=873686 If you were to buy a .50 cal barrel and cut it down / get it re-crowned, you are already probably $100 over that amount for just the T/C barrel.

All the best,
Glenn

If at first you don't succeed... buy newer / better equipment!

Glenn:
All good food for though.
I found an old encore manual I had and it talked about the differnet loads for the handgun so Im confident I can find the right charge. The "quick load Accurizer" is a concern, one which I had not thought about.
I have not looked at the optima and it is now on my list of things to do, the price is reasonable and seems to be a viable solution to my whem.

thanks for your thoughts

I bought a used 209x50 four years ago from Gander Mountain of all places and love it. I have shot two deer with it in WV. Use to shoot T7 pullets but switched to BH209 two years ago. Shot this 3 shot group with it last year. Go to http://specialtypistols.infopop.cc/eve/forums and do some searches on 209x50. I heave read a couple of guys had 26 in barrels shortened to 15 inches.

Yes, I see them every now and again, for now its an idea I've been kicking around and I'll continue to look and weigh the options.
