I bet this has been done here before, but as I'm foreseeing a need for a compact travel package (Uncle Sam tends to bounce me around on occasion for extended terms with little travel space) that I can go anywhere in North America and hunt all game in all seasons, I figure the input could get interesting. Currently, I have a pro hunter with a 20" stainless 356/358 Winchester barrel and another stainless 24" .243 sporter barrel. I'm looking at a 20ga turkey barrel and possibly a 280 or 30-06 barrel, and likely a .22lr and .308....just because I want one. I'll most likely have another frame or two, before it's over.

I'm thinking the 358/243/20ga covers me anywhere, anytime, though an '06 length chambering could fill a niche, maybe? In reality, I'd probably pack a 20ga SxS, for wing shooting.

Now, where am I wrong, and what should one have, in one hard case, that can hunt all of North America...with an encore? Cool

Nothing wrong with your thinking as far as I can tell except that you will need a 22LR. There are some places where you can't shoot the varmints (GA - crows) with anything but a rimfire.

For me, it would be a 22LR, 243 Win, one of the 06 cases (25, 30, or 270 Win) and one shotgun

Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

I'm thinking a .22, also. Today, with a 243 & 358, I'd HAVE to have a shotgun. I'll probably work on more ideal rifle calibers later...but not much a 243/358 won't do...for now. Wink

If it were rimfire, shotgun, and rifle, I'd use .22LR, 20 gauge, and a 7mm-08. That's just me though. I'm not a long-range shooter most of the time, and I tend to shy away from anything bigger than a .270 due to shoulder injury. Between my .270 and my 7mm-08, I just prefer the later with some 139 grain offerings. I personally haven't shot anything yet that required any larger, but if I were hunting larger game, I might add a long action rifle caliber barrel, and would probably go with the .270. .30-06 is too much for my shoulder, and I've found the .25-06, although very accurate in the Encore platform, didn't perform well for me with anything over 100 grains max bullet weight. I'd prefer to be somewhere between 130-168 grains in my heavier rifle caliber. Just my personal preference though.

All the best,
Glenn

If I was starting from scratch, and thinking small game, varmint/med game, turkey? Absolutely. 22LR, 260/7-08, 20ga. I'm thinking a little broader and I already have a 243 and 358. While a 7-08 is perfect for med game and will even work on elk, it's big for varmint and on the light edge for elk and bigger bears. Since I have the 243, it'll do up to deer/antelope, and the 358 will do for bigger stuff...plus it's been killing deer. I know many cartridges would be 'better', but what are thoughts on any real gap, that say a 280/30-06 or other might fill. I know it may seem they're splitting hairs with the 7-08, and to some extent they definitely are...but using the same logic, that 358 kinda muddies those waters. If I look at it from a needing a 300+ yard big game chambering perspective, then I may have a gap, and the
243 and 358 drop off there...and the 7-08 just gets there. Wouldn't a long action cartridge be more sensible...short of Magnus, what is it? I just enjoy the thought processes and opinions.

I'm going to change my mind here.... and add a 460 S&W - need something for brush. I thought about a 30/30 or a 357 Max, but I just like the 460.

Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

There you go. For really big, toothy stuff, in thick stuff, I might want something more than my .358...45-70-vicinity.

You might want to consider tossing a 209x50 in the mix. I don't believe there are many things your not allowed to hunt with a stuffer gun.

I took 2 frames to deer camp this year, ans several barrels.
I would not really feel hindered in any way if all I had was my 209x50, but I also put my 270 custom shop barrel in the case!
For bigger game,or an all around medium range option I have a 444 marlin barrel that shoots exceptionally well out to around 250 yards with Lever Revolution loads!
I also own a 375 H&H and a 300 win mag rifle barrel should I be headed to Alaska or someplace with truly big critters!
7mm08 and 30-06 pistol barrels round out my Encore collection (so far)
No shotgun barrels yet,
Then of course there are a couple of Contender frames and a bunch of barrels in the safe too!

Decisions,decisions,decisions!
If I where setting up a travel kit from scratch,I was limited in funds,I would stay with the 209x50,add a 243 class (6mm rem maybe) and a larger caliber for heavier game maybe a 300win,or a 338,that I can load down if need be!
A smooth bore 20 gauge would round things out for most everything else.
A rimfire might be handy but the shotgun would do in most cases for small game.
The 209 would wrk for anything in North America out to 200 yards but powder transportation regs might make unplanned trips harder, but the 6mm rem would work on varmints with lighter bullets up to large deer and even elk in a pinch!
Then again a 30-06 would work with light loads for varmints and heavy loads for all but the biggest bears!
DAM JUST GET 1 OF EACH AVAILABLE CALIBER!

with the .260 rem, you can load 95gr vmax all the way to 142gr smk's... helluva range of critters in that bullet weight. incredible range with the 142's (i get 12" groups at 1k)

I retired from the Feds after spending 35 years in Alaska with short trips all over the continental US.

Anytime someone arrived at a village with a gun or fishing rod the tongues started wagging, "Its obvious he didn't come to work."

I never wanted that to be said about me so I put together a suitcase Contender kit and a collapsible fishing rod..

30-30 barrel, scoped. 223 barrel, scoped. 22 rimfire barrel, scoped. 45/410 barrel set up for shotgun. All barrels were 10 inch.

I took everything from Black Bears, to European Hares, to Reindeer, to Wild Boar.
I've been retired for 5 years now, living in VA, and haven't fired a shot through it in that time.

I should trade the set for a couple of Glocks or something I can use.
