What is a good reliable scope that won't break the bank? I shoot at 100-300 yards with my Encore Pistol in .308

Thanks

What's the bank got to spend? and what would you shoot at at 300?

Basic target and silhouette shooting. Up to $300 is my price range.

re-adjust at each distance for the silly's? ie desire target knobs with reliable settings? or a ballistic-plex type reticle?

I like 2x , 4x leupolds, 2.5x8 leupold if I can afford it. I also use 2.5x7 Simmons which are cheaper, but I have had very good luck with them on heavier calibers, should be fine on smaller calibers.

I like the Burris's especially for anything beyond 100 and a must for 2-300. The old 10X with Adj. parallax, and target knobs is a great one fine plex or duplex. Another really good one is the 3-9 A-O target knob 3-9 w/Posiloc, the highest posiloc equipped handgun scope they made. The 3-12 is a dandy as well, tho without posiloc, but WITH Ballistic-plex. The current highest power w/posiloc is the 2-7 w A-O. You can get a great deal on a used one at the auction sites. Also a re-furb at Natchez and still get the lifetime warranty. I like to site-in off the bench at 100. then move back to 300. The higher power are 1/8"/per click, well better than the 1/4" or 1/2" that the others give. At 200 meters you should be able to consistently wipe out 22 rifle sized chickens That makes those 200 meter rams a piece of cake. Yeah, you have to cut those chickens out of heavier plate and chase them back farther at the range to retrieve them for re-sets, but it sure helps to perfect your technique. one of those baby chickens is about the size of an elk's heart so great practice for 300 and+ elk hunting. F! those 10" steel gongs.

I'm not really sure, I would be shooting at a constant distance on any given day. I own tactical and target scopes and prefer mildot/MP8 reticles. I like IOR, which I have for a my 204 Ruger barrel, but I don't want to spend that kind of money again on optics. Are mildots feasible on pistols?

Burris doesn't offer mil-dots with handgun scopes. I never did like mildots, too cluttered a field of view. I don't see the need to have "dots" over the center going up to the top, nor horizontally on both sides. Easier to just use the plex "arrows to center left/right, and the extra, small horizontal hashes as "aimers" to compensate for bullet drop without changing scope settings. The mil-dot scopes for rifle scopes use the same small bottom quadrant hashes rather than "dots" uniformly spaced like the other three quadrants. You can check the Burris site for examples of their reticles. A used or refurb Burris will run you less than typical retail Leupold and give you 10 X the scope. With a 3-12X on a 308 handgun, normal crosshair on 100, the 4 lower aim "guides" are ON at 200, 250, 350, and 450 yards.

That does look more practical, I enjoy ranging with an MP8 reticle but that looks more user friendly in general. This is the scope I have and reticle I normally use. http://swfa.com/IOR-25-10x42-Tactical-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P4457 9.aspx

Somehow I just can't see me forcing myself to dump 1300 for a rifle scope to use on a handgun. I snipe all the 3-9 posiloc Burris's I can get my paws on. Usually get em for around 230-250 depending on extra features. I've got 4 sittin on the shelf now waiting to get put on barrels. Also a nickle 3-12 with all the features except posiloc, they never offered posi on 3-12's, which is really irritating. Did see a matte 2-7 AO Posi sell a little bit ago for 267, which is a little steeper than most I see go through. Nice thing about the posiloc is once set, you can shoot 100 rounds taking game every year till you die and never have to waste ammo checking to make sure it's sighted in. The 2-7 is 1/4", all the higher ones are 1/8" clicks.

Like I mentioned, that scope is on a 204 Ruger rifle barrel. Awesome optics, clear as a bell at any distance. Same glass as Zeiss. I also paid $709 for it new, the prices went way up on them.

The glass is so clear I don't need a spotting scope until I go out to 200 yards, and it's only 2.5-10 power Smile
