I have a new in the box 12" barrel in .223 for my Encore. This is my first rifle cartridge in a handgun and I'm trying to decide on which optic to put on it. I plan on using it mostly on paper but it will see some service in the whistlepig fields, if I can a field or two to hunt them in. Very Happy I have been looking at the Nikon Force XR 2.5-8 X 28. I like the price point $289 compared to the Burris and Leupold.

I'm wondering if it is too big for a 12" barrel? Does anyone have any experience with the Force XR? Thanks for the help!

too big? length? I've never had a pistol scope sit with the objective anywhere near the muzzle of a 14", I couldn't imagine where it would ever sit anywhere flush or ahead on a 12". Usually to get the eye-relief to sit working good, most of it's length sits behind the frame.
If you mean "Too big" as "power wise", unless you think you're going to get within 10 yards of a whistle-pig, you can't have too much "power" for making good shot placement.
Can't help you out on the Force XR, strictly a Burris 3-9 and 3-12 man. I prefer the 32mm Objectives (preferably adjustable), and all the "power" I can find.
