There's been some questions asked about these and they've been around for a long time, especially the Contender versions. The theory being OK, cool, use the 410 mode for small game, then still have the 45 mode for deer and the like. They've been available in the contender both with and without Vent Ribs in the bill barrels. The original came with a soldered on front sight, adjustable rear, and external choke with octagonal barrels.
When using solid projectiles in 45 Colt, you removed the choke. The later round barrels had internal chokes and adjustable sights whether with or without the ribs. The without rib retained the soldered on front sight, with a fully adjustable rear. With the ribbed version, the front sight was screw adjustable up and down, the fold-down rear was windage adjustable. Even the 357 and 44 Hot-shots were set up the same way.
The 357 and 44's were eventually deleted quite some time ago, the 45-410 was resurrected when ATF, and the courts cleared the 410 as "legal" since they were chambered in rifled as opposed to smoothbore barrels, not "sawed-off" shotguns. Others were doing the same thing, like the Taurus "judge".
Going further with their "smartness", they made another change, substituted the elevation adjustable front, with a round bead, ala commonly seen on many shotguns in used for YEARS. Then replaced the windage adjustable flip-ip rear with a buckhorn style rear. Hmmmmmmm, drift the sight left and right for windage? What about elevation? Then to top it off, the damn thing is PLASTIC and you can easily move/remove it with your fingers. You're better off to remove it, or your liable to LOSE IT.
Now tell me, is that a serious set-up for using 45 colt on a deer even at 50 yards? Now you've taken a deer capable round and have a worthless chambering unless you've dropped out of your tree stand, landed on the deer's back like a rodeo cowboy and close enough to use that sucker to dispatch the deer. But then, why not just use your knife, that'd be a lot quieter, and not pack the extra weight. Don't even need to fill out a 4473 and go through a background check.

The point is, IF you're even thinking of making one of these a "deer" gun at around 50 yards, do yourself and the deer a favor by getting one of the older barrels, and that goes for all three if the "choked" rounds. Just remember, with the 45-410 you effectively have a 4 or less inch with a long free-bore in the 45, the other two aren't near as bad with the 357 and 44 ammo. 45 had a long jump to the rifling, and the internal choke will eat some of that. The new ones aren't much better than a spear, you might be better off with throwing knives. Hmmmmmm, Mr. Segal and/or Mr Norris, wanna come out and bag your deer with throwing stars?
