which caliber would you choose, 7mm rem. mag or 280 AI, it will be used mostly in pa for deer & bear, I have shot both calibers, recoil is not an issue, thinking about MGM barrel heavy 26in.

If you don't reload go with the 7 Mag. If you do, 280 AI just to be different.

Personally, I think a 7mm mag is overkill for eastern deer and bear. It doesn't start to become a "better" choice until you are past 300 yards. Up to that point, a 7mm-08 will kill them just as dead with half the recoil and muzzle blast. If you are reloading, you'll use significantly less powder too. .280 is a great caliber (even without the AI). You might not be able to find .280 ammo in your local retailer but there is plenty on line.

In Pa ans Maine, probably more black bears have been killed with the 30-30 than any other cartridge, second being the 35 Rem. The 7 mag (agreeing with Doyle) is a bit overkill for both Pa deer and bear. I also agree with his 7-08 assessment. Again, concerning the 280 REM, If I were to get any encore, my first choice would be a 280 Rem, losing very little to the 7 Mag. Another choice in the 7 bore that's excellent is the old 7X57 Mauser, Jack O'Connor's wife's choice on almost anything over the globe. In the encore, the european 7X57Rimmed would be a wonderful choice with the merits of rimmed headspacing.

If you are going to be hunting with it, then neither. I'd go with a standard weight barrel. Your shoulder will appreciate it when you are toting in through the woods. Heavy barrels don't necessarily shoot any better than thin barrels. What they do is heat up slower so that multiple shots at the range don't start stringing as early as they would with a thin barrel. That is a good thing when you are doing serious range work - not so good when the rifle is carried in the field. For length, no need to go longer than 24" in a 7x57.

Of the 2 mentioned, this is the correct answer.

Seems to be a school of thought that you can't be 'overgunned'. Laughing
I personally prefer a rem mag in a bolt gun, but in an encore I'm gonna stick with a 7x57.
You'll do just fine with that MGM bbl.
