I found this on another site, thought it worthwhile to share. It started as a rant and became an education for me.
I've had about a half-dozen BP barrels that I've picked up in trade/buys and all but two had some form of pitting/rust. I don't shoot BP,so these have all been passed on to other shooters. I do make it a point to let the buyers know what state the bore is in before they commit to buy. When buying, if you've got your hands on it then take out the breech plug and inspect the bore then and there.
Here's what I learned.
1) If you're new to BP shooting, read the manual.
--- If there isn't a manual, TC has it online.
2) Do not use your smokeless powder common sense for BP.
--- BP is a completely different animal.
--- What works with your 22LR won't hold true for your BP barrel.
3) Pitting is not normal and is preventable.
--- Pitting is the same thing as buying Contender barrels for your Encore.
. . . . (Actually worse, you can buy a Contender frame and that issue is solved).
--- It isn't good enough to think you're doing it right.
4) When practical, clean you BP immediately after each shot.
--- Make it thorough using a solvent that works with BP
--- Follow it with a protectant appropriate for BP. (BoreButter came highly recommended)
5) Don't forget to clean the breech and breech plug
--- don't forget to protect them as well (More BoreButter).
6) Disassemble and clean the frame.
--- Clean everything including the firing pin assembly.
--- Do this after each session, or at least at the end of the season.
Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!
