I am considering a 45-70 for black and grizzly bear. Wondering how the round performs out of handgun barrels; 100yd accuracy and velocities with 300-350-400gr bullets. Looking for feedback from Contender shooters.

I have a 12.5 inch contender with a 2x leupold scope, been shooting it off and on for about 30 years. 400 grain cast or jacketed bullets do between 1450 and as high as 1600 FPS. Be careful of recoil. I have done 2 inch groups at 100 yards more than once with 2x scope. A great deer or bear killer with any of those bullets. Also have shot 2 cape buffalo with 500 grain solids and soft points with complete penetration. As J D Jones has said ,it is a 150 yard sledge hammer.

... the story goes the J.D. took an Alaskan caribou at 175 yds with a 14" Bbl in 45-70 wearing a 2X scope!
The round is effective, no doubt.

Thanks wwkmag & gemihur. Good to get some feedback from actual shooters instead of relying on loading manuals. I am hoping for 100yd plus shots; don't think I want any closer than that to a 400# plus bear! My 35 Remington works great for deer and, although I have had some tell me it'll take down a bear (and I'm sure a well-placed shot inside of 100yds would do the job), I think I want substantially more thump when I take on a bear.

I have watched several YouTube videos of people firing the Contender 45-70. For the most part the recoil looked managable. One particularly nasty recoil was with a barrel that did not have a compensator. Another nasty recoil was with a young, inexperienced shooter who wasn't gripping the weapon properly, actually losing the handle on the gun and it flew over his head. I'm certain some loads will be more comfortable to shoot than others. My intention is to use a 350gr bonded hollow point or flat point with H322. I have read several accounts of 400 grain bullets, particularly cast bullets, finding the way nearly through a 400# black bear. I'm hoping for 2" groups at 100 to 150yds.

Your intentions sound great! I do not think you will have any problem, good luck with your hunting.

Your bullet's weight is a BIG factor in the recoil formula.
The 350 gr. will be quite manageable.
I shoot 340gr. RNFP cast myself, and I ain't big, but the the big don't mess with me.
