OK, it's been a while. Surely someone has something they want to talk about? I mean, come on. It's spring
I also realize that we're busy folks... I've still got a reloading thing to run through. In my defense I went from 308 to 7-08 and was hoping to find enough brass, but! I then figured out I can convert all my 308 to 7-08!! Now all I need are the dies. And time.
So what's up?
Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

A little searching and I found this... "I cut my 35 Whelen to 19 inches and still get 2500 fps with a 250 grain Speer spitzer. Plenty flat enough for me and I killed a coyote at a bit over 300 yards with it."
In one of the other sites I found someone who said... split the difference, go with 21". Generally, I go with what I want it to look and feel like and live with the results. If you reload you can use faster powders to make up for the difference in barrel length (to a point). What's really interesting is change in thinking as people do more and more testing. When I started shooting the rule was you lose about 50fps or so for every inch of barrel you cut off. For some calibers they've found the velocity goes up (powder was burned out by the time the bullet reached the end of the barrel). Now it's somewhere around 20-25 fps - per inch. So basically you're expecting to give up about 50fps from 22 to 20.
The only caveat is you can't put back on what's been cut off
