Hello to all. New member, and new Contender owner. I have a Contender Serial # 228XX with a .22 rimfire barrel that wont shoot.
Have 4 other barrels and the shoot very well. I noticed the .22 bbl has a step on the barrel lug. The other 4 are flat across the bottom.
What have I got, and can this barrel be made to work ?
I appreciate any information. By the way. All 5 barrels are 10" Octagon.

Hang on TITE !!!!

I am hoping you have done this already, but just in case, and please do not think this is a stupid question. Have you changed the hammer selector to rimfire?

It sounds like the locking bolt is not seating or locking in far enough.
If you have another one to try out of another barrel, it will tell you if that is the problem. Some of the older locking bolts were one piece, not as good as the two piece ones now. Also some where on this site I believe there is an article on how to polish the locking bolt so it will seat further. If you have never done this you have to go very lightly on the polishing. Good luck.

There's a thread with more details, but try this.
1) Clean the locking bolts with alcohol
2) Color them with a dry erase marker
3) Close the frame and open it a couple times

How far up the locking bolt is scraped clean?

If it isn't about half way to two thirds, then you'll need to carefully stone the surface down a bit. Don't take much because too much is bad.

Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

You shouldn't need to remove them, just clean the top off so the marker stays on.... but

Just punch out the roll pin...

I just compared the Bolt of the BBL in question to the other 4.It'sbolt is .190 thick, and flat on the top surface. The other 4 vary in thickness from .170, to .180, and all show signs of having been filed on. Top surfaces are not flat but angled, tapered . The Blueing on the bolt that needs work is only worn about 1/4 of the face of the bolt.

You are correct on the tapering, and you need to maintain it. The filing is usually just machining or wear over time.

That 1/4 up the face is what I'd call a smoking gun.
