Did not use my Encore as I wasn't happy with the .280 Remington barrel with 160 Gr Nosler Partitions I was working on... Recoil was more than I anticipated and it still needs more load work! I was planning on shooting out to 300 yards so I was trying to get the group under 1 MOA and was only getting 1.5 MOA at best... still minute of Moose, and as it turns out, way more accurate than what I needed in the field.
Anyway, I took my Savage 16 .308 Winchester with Savage muzzle brake to Quebec Moose hunting for the rifle season, and killed a 51 1/2" Bull that the Butcher estimated to be 1200 pounds live weight.
We were walking and calling when I heard a grunt 70 yards away on the other side of a small hill (mound). His display on the way in was worthy of video for a hunting show; challenging with grunting, racking, swaying and posing. He came in to 20 yards on a string, to Dany's calls and racking of the trees, and took a Barnes 168 Gr. Vor-Tx BT bullet just left of the breastbone through lung and the right side of the heart. He spun around and sprinted 20 yards and tripped (fell) over a fallen tree... My first Moose - soon to reside on my wall.
Happy, Happy, Happy!
