Shot my 35 whelen Encore Rifle today at 150 yards. I didnt have an excellent rest, and not a lot of time to shoot, but i would shoot 2 times; one shot, then the next would be about 4" higher. horizontal spread no larger than 1". I got a little steadier rest and shot one 3 shot group 1.25" I am reloading with H4895. does anyone else reload for the 35 Whelen? any suggestions on powder selection for 35 Whelen or does anyone know reasons for vertical stringing in the encore?

Full length sizing, but using 30-06 brass, which is a little short. using sierra gameking 225 grain bullet.

I have read some things about vertical stringing now. i will try to tinker with forearm screw tension to see if that helps

The G2 will do that if you have too little headspace. Think I have heard of the same problem with the Encore, although I don't have an Encore. You might check that out.

As a general rule, vertical shot strings are traced to bedding problems. Looking at the screw tension at the forearm soulds like a good place to start looking. I used to load for the Whelen and I also used the 225 grain SGK's and they are some deadly accurate mini missles. I know that many use 30-06 brass for Whelen rounds but I never felt comfortable with doing that. I know that a bag of unfired brass is not cheap but they are not that expensive either. Especially considering how many times that they can be reloaded. It may be a good investment.

I think its going to make a shooter, just got to work up a good load for it. Staying away from the 30-06 brass it's just easier to stay with 35 brass. Got some factory load Rem corelokts and have been practicing with them (doesn't group well with them but now i have brass). IMR 4064 and a 200 grn bullet shoots well enough for hunting. When season ends I will work on a tack driver load, it doesn't seem to like H4895 and BLC2 as well as IMR4064. have a few samples of RL15 loaded up but haven't shot them yet.

The recoil is pretty sharp but not really uncomfortable, but that is where the problem was; I had my old scope mounts taken off and Leupold dual dovetail mounts put on it.

I have some loaded with 56.5 grains of RL-15 in a Remington case plugged with a 225 grain Sierra GameKing and it shoots GREAT in my rifle but have not shot these in my Encore yet. RL-15 is a really good powder for those heavy bullets in the Whelen. I like 225 grain and 250 grain bullets a bit better than the 200's. Just a personal preference.

goinssr, I'll have to remember that load. I have a few my buddy loaded for me with different charge weight of RL15 and the 225 sierra's. I really don't want to go heavier than 225 grn, Would like to keep my range a much as possible. I do have a 270 WSM but i want to hunt with just one gun. It's kind of hard finding a large selection of 35 bullets around here. I did take an 8 point with my Encore a few days ago. the 200 grn did it's job.

1. Head Space
2. Hot Barrel

Check the head space on all your loads. There can be a huge variance from casing to casing which needs to be fixed. SAMMI standards are from .003 to .006. I like to have mine set at .001 to .002. This should correct the vertical stringing. Check out Mike Bellm's web page. Very helpful.
