I picked up a 460 S&W 20" barrel a couple weeks ago and finally got a chance to shoot it Sunday. Mounted a Nikon Slughunter scope and thought I was good to go. I had some Hornady Lever 45 Colt ammo available so I thought I would shoot to scope in. Everything was solid and torqued to spec. I started a 25 yards to see where I was at. was on the paper right away but I could not get it to zero in what so ever. No mater what I did It was up, down, left or right???? I installed a larger hinge pin before I started shooting but nothing else. This is my first rifle barrel for the gun, as I've only shot the 50 cal. and rifled shotgun barrel on it. Any suggestions, or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Greg

Have you tried like 3 shots of 460 ammo to see if it grouped?

Reason I ask: that's a long jump to the rifling for a 45LC.

My 15" 460 S&W Encore shoots awesome and the 454 shoots in the same hole. Not tried any 45lc. My pistol shoots so good with iron sights, I went and bought a pair of store bought glasses instead of putting a scope on it. 100 yards is nothing.

You are the 2nd person this month that I've seen a post from that couldn't get a 20" .460 to group at all. The other poster was on a different forum and as far as I know is still struggling with it.

Not tried the 460 yet. The 454 shoots great so far with Win. 250 gr. super X.

Since this topic is on the 460, and has morphed to 45 colt and 454 Casull, and as I recall T/C did a barrel chambered in 454 Casull, I noticed in the reference section that the twist for traditional 45 cal pistol barrels s 1:16 LH. Which includes 45 ACP, 45 Colt.
Listed in the encore reference section the 45 454 and 460S&W twists are listed as just 1:16, implying right hand twist like every other non-45 cartridge. I'd be willing to bet that the T/C 454 and 460 barrels are indeed 1:16LH and not right hand twist. How about you guys that have the 454 and 460's check your twist and see if they are right or left handed twists. I can't believe they'd go against the grain and have both twists blanks. S&W's gun for the 460 uses "gain twist" rifling. I wonder if they insist on that same rifling in the T/C encore barrels? Twist getting gradually faster as it moves to that 20" exit?
Jim

Further: A lot of people ask what the twist is in t/C's calibers. There's a HUGE list in the encore reference section. That huge list could be condensed and made easier to go through by NOT looking for some specific chambering.
For example: ALL 17 caliber barrels are 1:10. ALL 20(204 bores) are 1:12. The 22lr is 1:15 ALL 22 (224 bores) centerfires are 1:12 Every 243/6mm bore is 1:10. 25 cals are 1:10 260/6.5's are 1:8 7mm(284) are 1:09 (You think they used a different twist depending on if it was the little 7TCU than a 284 Win, or a 7Rem Mag? GUESS AGAIN. It's all determined by BORE SIZE. One blank is used for every 7mm/284 bore. That goes through that whole chart. All 30 cal/308 bores are 1:10 from 30 carbine up to 300 winmag.

Isn't stability more a function of the bullet length and not necessarily the speed of that bullet? So the twist matches the typical length of the bullet so case is irrelevant?

I had a 15" .460 S&W barrel for the encore that I could never get to shoot worth a fart. It had a brake on it (which I believe was aftermarket). Not sure if that brake may have affected the accuracy or not. But factory Hornady's grouped like a shotgun at 25 yards (maybe a bit of exaggeration) but you get the point. I tried hand loading, but it was too punishing to fire 20-30 rounds in a session finding the "Goldilocks" load. Gave up and sold it. Enjoy loading and shooting my other barrels much more. 7-30 waters, .223, 7tcu, 357mag.

supposedly "weight"/caliber. ie 223 60's and heavier. 30's 220+. Especially a concern with people shooting rounds like the 300 Whisper/BLK subsonic. You know, all those guys that keep asking "What's the twist of your barrel". If it's a T/C made barrel it's a crazy question, it's going to be 1:10, same as any other .308 bore barrel. The point IS that that huge list based on chambering can be condensed to a handfull of twist rates for T/C's factory barrels, solely based on bore SIZE, not the specific chambering. A poorly installed or made brake can affect accuracy, as well as a poorly designed one. Same with Compensated barrels.

Looked at my 15" Encore 460 barrel and it is left handed twist, 1:16. S&W put the gain twist in their revolver to make it easier on the scopes. I shoot Winchester 260 gr. Partition Gold ammo in my 15" Encore and it is very accurate.

THANK YOU for the confirmation on the 460 LEFT HAND twist; just need the same for the 454's. They used the gain twist to give the bullet time and length to gradually get to final twist. They also had two compensators packed with the gun. We can be sure they didn't give the T/C brand the same consideration, factory 460 revolvers didn't come with scopes or even scope mounts. They could care less about scopes they don't make, read the ass-ache someone here went through on his T/C branded scope when sent in for repair. Customer oriented thinking gets killed by the bean-counters. Profits rule, nothing else.

Yes, I seen the post about the scope return. Gives you something to look forward to, doesn't it.
