I am thinking about getting a custom barrel. I would like to end up with a 20" .223. Im not aiming for top of the line stuff I would just like to have a decent shooter. So I was wondering who all make encore barrels (ive checked mgm and bullberry) or who modifies stock barrels. Like I buy a used one and send it off to be chopped down. I don't really need full on custom just lookin for who others have had good results with. thanks for your help. im not the best with words hope this makes sense. Smile

2 darn good encore/contender specialists: Bellm, and David White. Either would do a SUPERB job shortening a 23" contender barrel, or a 24/26/28 encore barrel to 20, and give it a true target crown. That's talkin a stock common T/C 223 rifle barrel, new or used. The crown improvement alone should make it a better shooter, even if they just shaved off the bare minimum.

Hard to beat MGM, just a plain Jane .223 barrel from them is $350.

Made sense to me, aparantly not so with several others. The average, typical gunsmith isn't a fanatical benchrest knowledgeable guy. he'll likely shorten and crown to look like what was already there, or what he saw and liked on Brand X's barrels. Both Belmm and White specialize in T/C guns, and know what needs to be done to wring out at least some accuracy. Between the two, I, Personally, would opt to have White do it.

Yeah, may be true. My local gunsmith I have do work is a fanatical bench rest guy. He custom builds bolts for long range rifle competition so I guess I am a bit spoiled. Smile I did preface my statement with "reputable" though. Smile I have known a couple of other so called "gunsmiths" that I wouldn't let put a recoil pad on.

Reputable: one in fifty. Now just have to find one for Dan in or near Indiana. Mail does serve Oklahoma though (White) and Colorado (Bellm).
