Ok I just got my turkey barrel in and I need some advice. First off all you turkey hunters what size shot do you like and I hear the recoil is a bear. If recoil is that bad do I need to get a limb saver or something. Thanks for your help.

I use 1 7/8 oz #5's (lead) in a 3" shell. I don't think the recoil is bad at all. Besides, If you hit the puppy on the first shot, You'd never recall what the recoil was, you'd be haulin ass toward the turkey.

I have killed a bunch of turkeys using only high brass 2.75 inch loads in a standard full choke Model 11 Remington shotgun. Probably the longest shot was about 35 yards and it was bang flutter flop. I have not hunted turkeys in many years now but I always used number 6 shot. Aim for the head.

Size of the load needed depends on how good you are as a caller and how skiddish the birds are. If you can get them in close, you don't need a huge load.

ok lets say I hunt skiddish birds on public land and probably not a world champion caller. So lets say I would say taking a 35-40 yard shot

A 2.75 inch high brass load of number 6 shot. Always did the trick for me with just a standard full choke barrel.

I have tried several combinations but found that the Indian creek choke with Winchester Long Beard #5 shot was the best at the cost for 10 shells.

At 40 yards

I use a Leupold 1-4 with a turkey plex reticle and couldn't be happier. I'm using a Pure Gold choke with Hevi Magnum Blen 3" shell. It puts around 300 pellets into a 10" circle at 40 yards and drops birds, DRT.
