Mike,
This one has been beat to death a few times on here. Just to save you some time, I figured I'd post the most referenced article regarding this subject.

I have never liked the 28's. All I own now are 24's in regular taper or Custom Shop bulls, and one 16.3" that I had cut down and recrowned. I had a 26" heavy taper that I really loved in .25-06, but I sold it and regret ever doing so.
All the best,
Glenn

All of my rifle 24's are factory (or Custom Shop), but all started and stayed as 24's. If I were to purchase a 28", it would be with the intention of cutting it down to about 22"-24" and getting it re-crowned. If I could get that 26" .25-06 barrel back, I'd leave it at 26" because it was a heck of a shooter. But if I bought one that didn't shoot well, I'd have no issue getting it cut and re-crowned.
Shotgun barrels - leave them alone.
All the best,
Glenn
