Anybody know of any recipes for low velocity 223 loads? I found some with IMR Trailboss powder but a little slower than what i want.

The reason i want to shoot reduced loads is mainly the noise while target plinking. But also just experimenting to make my gun more versatle. My 223 can be my 22 LR, my 22 Mag, or i can get it up to 3500 fps fairly easily. The 223 with full power loads will destroy rabbits, squirrels or coyote pelts. the trailboss loads are traveling at about 10000-1200fps according to load data, thats pretty slow.

You can find all kinds of these loads (Unique, Red Dot, Blue Dot) by doing a google search. I found a good article once using small blue dot loads.

Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

You will need to run it over a chrony, but I think those Trail Boss loads will put you in your 22LR range depending upon which bullet and the range you use to take small game. It will also just about fill the case and no issue with powder position.

Just follow the Trail Boss formula start at 70% and work up to max. amount which is where the bullet ends inside the case and be sure not to compress the powder charge.

thanks for the info guys. I will try to find the Blue Dot loads, I have about 6 lbs of that stuff. I also found some loads on Hodgdons site with H4895. you can reduce the powder charge down to about 16 grains in the 223 and go on up to the max load. just not a lot of powder in the case. I shot some, they do ok. I will have to work up some loads. I also tried the Trail Boss loads. I don't have a chrony, but with 60 grain to 55 grain bullets and max loads max loads the noise level is about like a 22 mag. 60 grain FMJ shoots through 4" of dry oak, 3" of dry pine and is lost in the backstop. no signs of excessive pressure.

Here's a page about low velocity loads in rifles:

http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm

It doesn't particularly mention the .223, but maybe your could take the data for the .32-20 Win with a 115 gr bullet and work from there? The .32-20 has a water capacity of 22 gr whereas the .223 has a water capacity of 31 gr. Considering the fact that the .223 is rated for higher pressure and the fact that you are using a lighter bullet, I would think that this would pretty much guarantee that any load that was safe for a .32-20 would still be safe for a .233 from an overpressure standpoint. The only things that you will need to worry about would be if you were using an AR and needed to be able to cycle the action on it or if you put such a low amount of powder in it that the bullet didn't even come out of the barrel.

Here's what I've pulled up. I think the first one is the one I remember reading a LONG time ago.

I was going to pass on the warning I was taught, that low powder density can lead to detonation.... but a quick search of the internet says this is/was a myth/misconception. Still not to old to learn new things.

I use the 4895 for reduced loads in my 308 win for handguns. they group like a dream but tend to be pretty dirty.

Scrub your bore real well and use a cast bullet lube with Johnson Paste wax over 9 grains of Unique for a decent magnum rimfire round.
