I haven't bought any new barrels for my Contenders or Encore for many years.I seem to find decent older barrels in good condition. As a result I'm not up to speed on new barrels.

My question is concerning a Thompson Encore 20 gauge Pro Hunter stainless steel slug barrel. All of my stainless steel barrels for both my Contender and Encore have a what appears to be a SS barrel lug.The new barrel that I just purchased has a blued barrel lug. This barrel was also advertised in a clam shell pack but it was shipped without any Thompson packaging.

Is this a legitimate stainless steel barrel or is it something else such as the Weathershield ?

This is to be a gift and the packaging is important.I've always schooled my boys to save all boxes associated with this hobby because you may never know when this will become important.

In viewing the TC website, they only show the SS barrels as having SS lugs.

Any help concerning this issue would be appreciated.

Thanking members in advance.

The lug color came up a couple years ago, bottom line is it's no longer a determining factor. Based on other comments I've read the weathersheild is better than the stainless because of the type of metal used in the SS barrels. The caveat is S&W barrels seem to have a habit of changing color (spot rusting or discoloring) in recent years.

Not sure if this is true or not, but worth checking out....If you can stick a magnet to it, then it's simply a coating and not true stainless. If a magnet won't stick, it's stainless. (another site says this is hooey)

Further reading pulled up this tidbit. Because of issues with TC SS, treat your SS barrels like you would a blue one. Keep it dry, oil it often.

Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

Thanks for your response Crubear. The Haus of arms is where I purchased this barrel. It still concerns me that I didn't receive the clamshell packaging.

I also concerns me that he shows the barrel in a clamshell and advertises this:

"This Thompson Center Encore Prohunter TC4822 SS 20 Gauge Rifled shotgun barrel is new in its factory clampack. It is chambered for 3" shells. Visit the Accessories catagory on this HausofArms.com site and you will find the appropriate forend for this barrel."

What I received was the barrel wrapped in bubble wrap and shipped in a brown cardboard box.

He also shows the clamshell pack and nowhere does it state SS on the pack but he shows an insert which states SS barrel.

I paid for a SS barrel and believe I'm entitled to receive what I bought.

Thanks again Crubear.

I just now received an email in response to my email which I sent to Marty at Hausofarms.com.

Marty said he removed this barrel from a new gun and then shipped the barrel.Since this is gift I would like all of the appropriate packaging and stated that in my email.

It appears he is willing to provide the packaging so I can pass on the appropriate clamshell pack.
