I need a scope or dot, or holograph. I use Nikon Pro-Staff's on most of my rifles, and love them. I have a few Bushnell Trophy red dot scopes on some firearms - my son's .22 and .357 Max rifle, as well as a .40 carbine I use for having fun with at the range. They have been good optics too.

However, they all seem really big. The other day, I started thinking about maybe trying a EoTech on it, but it still seems big.

This is going on a 15" barrelled 7mm-08 pistol, to be used for deer hunting. Max range will probably be between 50 and 75 yards, and thus my thoughts on the dot or holograph type. Or do you think I'd be better off with a low power scope? I've never used a pistol to hunt, so this is new territory for me.

All the best,
Glenn

The red dot scopes are nice but if you want one that will hold up to heavy recoil they are expensive.
If you are only shooting out to 75 yards max a 2x or 4x long eye relief scope would be ideal.
You can't go wrong with an older Leupold.
Check Ebay and Eds you can usually find good deals.

Hey Glen,
I use a Burris 2-6 but I need to shoot a little farther most of the time. My very first pistol scope was a TC 2.5X20. It's a cheap scope but if you want to try it out I'll ship it to you. The nice thing about is that it is small and very light weight.

txbowhunter31,
Thanks for the reply. I contacted someone on TBH about a M8 2x Leupold he had for sale, but no reply so far.

Greg,
Thank you very much for the offer, but I'd feel terrible if something happened to your optics in shipping. If you decide to sell it, please let me know, as 2.5x might be just the ticket.

All the best,
Glenn

I went through the exact same process as you. After lots of reading here and on handgun hunting magazine forum I decided to go with the red dot. I have an 30mm UltraDot on my 7mm-08 and love it. At the range I can put a nice group on a 8.5X11 piece of paper at 100 yards. That is all I need for hitting a mule deer or elk here in colorad.

I'd be looking for a decent fixed power pistol scope-Leupold, Burris, etc. I spent alot of time looking on fleabay recently for a used scope to snipe at the end of an auction, and they had a few deals on pistol scopes. Wish you luck in your search Glenn. And thanks for directing me here, nice place to hang out.

At those ranges why not just put a set of fiber optic sights on it, they show up well in all lighting conditions and are small and light. I put some on my bear gun, it's a marlin guide gun and last year killed a nice buck at 90 yds. while bear hunting. mike

I bought a Burris 2x20 pistol scope yesterday at Academy for $175, tax included. Got home and discovered the temporary Encore base I was going to use with some Millet rings I had laying around has gone AWOL. So now I need to order a Talley setup anyway.

What do you think - Medium or Low for this sized scope on a pistol? I was originally thinking low, but have some concerns about hammer spur clearance.

All the best,
Glenn

Go as high as you want on a pistol scope Glenn, ya might as well get some hammer clearance. Mike
