Was just wondering. We tend to buy calibers such as a .243 in a short rifle with a low powered scope for the youth and women to hunt whitetails with, you know, less recoil, easier to handle. Yet, us "armchair commando" men hunt whitetails with .270, .308, .30-06, 7mag and I have even seen some hunt with .300 win mag. We constantly hear talk about bullet placement as well as the expansion of the bullet for an effective kill. So, why do we trust a small caliber like a .243 with youth and women and we think we men have to have such large calibers? Also, we spend hours at the range tuning a load so we can shoot a tick off of a deer. Are women and kids better at shot placement than us men?
Lets discuss.

I've always wondered why "Manly" Hunters say you can use a .243 as long as you're careful with shot placement? I suspect shot placement is equally important when shooting a 500 Loudenboomer, but that's only a suspicion.
Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

I'm in the opposite category. Whenever someone asks me for a youth recommendation I would never recommend a .243. To me, a .243 really is dependant on shot placement - more so than I would trust to an excited young hunter. Yes, they need lower recoil but not at the expense of killing ability. My recommendation for them is usually 7mm-08 or .260. Only a tad more recoil than a .243 but a MUCH heavier bullet that is not nearly as sensitive to shot placement.

I am switching over to the 6.8 SPC and will be shooting hand loaded cartridges (110g Barnes TTSX) the same as I hunted with my .270 barrel and my .270 bolt action with cartridges loaded with the 130g Barnes TTSX and Varget powder. The 6.8 SPC on the AR platform has very little recoil and the ability to not have to rack a second round while losing your site picture. I know that not all states allow ARs for hunting but it is no different than using a Browning BAR rifle with the exception of felt recoil.

You know back in the day a 30-30 was the deer gun to have. Now everyone thinks of the bigger faster cals. I myself use the 260 Rem when I go west and hunt. But most of my hunting is done with a pistol. So far I would have to say that my favorite is the 260 Rem in the pistol also, but I have kill several deer with my 444 Marlin in the pistol. Out to 200 yards I can drop them in their tracks with it pushing a Nosler 200gr bullet. I also use the 454 Casull with kills out to 300 yards with it. The 357 Max, 445 Super Mag, and 7-08 cals I also use whenever I have a chance to also. These are all 15" barrels but the 454 which is a 12". I'm working on a 45-70 shooting a sabot out of it now. Once I get things looking good on it I'll make up a post on it. So far I'm down to under 1" group at 50 yards. I'm having to change powders since capacity is an issue.
