IMO - the most efficient woods cartridge available for whitetails is the .375 Winchester. 2,000 fps, almost zero recoil (I use it in a 15" encore barrel) and gret bullet selection.

not to mention, it's a light-switch for whitetails...

I agree. Caliber doesn't really matter as long as you put the pill in the right spot. All of my nephews got their first deer using my BIL's mini 14

another favorite of mine is the 20ga slug.have one of the h&r ultra slug guns in the 3" 20ga and love it!shoot the 3" 1oz remington buckhammers out of it till this year, remington quit making them, so i guess i'll have to go back to the brenneke silver magnums till i run out of them.love this gun so much that i bought one of the fancy laminated stock 12ga versions of this gun=shot it 3 times and sold it!!!!!!the difference in recoil between the 20ga and the 12ga is incredible and personally see know need to have to use a 12ga.

243 is fine for deer but i don't think it's a good choice for beginners. too many variables can lead to a lost animal. not so good on raking shots unless using a bonded premium bullet, not much of a blood trail from a poor shot, etc. the 257 bob is a better choice and doesn't kick much more. my thought is that if the person in question cant handle a 30-30, 260,or 7mm08, they probably shouldn't be hunting big game. just my opinion, but the 243 is an experts gun, not a beginners!

i'm a straight, white, republican, catholic, god fearing, gun owning patriotic believer in freedom....how else can i piss you off today?

So my 8 year old, shooting a .357 magnum T/C Encore rifle at deer less than 50 yards shouldn't be hunting? Wow. That's quite a statement. I'll let him know. Very Happy

I don't hear many experts touting the advantages of using the .243 over any other caliber. I've heard a lot about .30-06, .270, 7mm-08, .25-06, .257 Roberts, .280, etc... much more than I've heard talk about the "expert" nature of a .243. Actually, until I saw your post, I've never heard anyone note the .243 as an expert gun.

Respectfully, I don't agree with those statements at all. I'm not trying to change your opinion either. I'm just stating my disagreement.

My belief - Shoot what you can handle, and be accurate with it. Don't worry if someone else shoots something bigger.

All the best,
Glenn

If at first you don't succeed... buy newer / better equipment!

In other words don't get caliber envy!
A.22 LR can be very effective on any deer and that is why poachers prefer it as their silent caliber.
Glen, your 8 year old is just fine shooting a .357 at 50 yards. I still use my lever action .357 for a brush gun when conditions require a short barreled rifle. Shot many a wild boar with it as well.
