i have owned the tc contender for over twenty years now. I've had the super 16 bbl in a 22 hornet for just as long. a few years back, i picked up a factory 23" 30/30. i have been reloading for these two rounds ever since i've owned them with decent accuracy. i purchased the 23" 204 ruger bbl this september and am shocked at how bad my reloading progress for this round is. i get tighter patterns with my old topper deluxe 12 ga single shot. granted, i haven't tried different bullets in it yet but,i'm not too sertain about dumping much more money into it. bullets used so far has been the nosler 32 gr ballistic tip. i've chosen this bullet from the start for it's ability to hold together upon impact. i have ordered other different bullets and am expecting them in soon. i've read a few options/suggestions to try some factory rounds but, i don't have any available for purchase in my area (thats why i reload). have any of you had this problem or knows anyone that has with the 204 ruger? i hope this bbl isn't a flop...

Its possible to have a bad barrel but don't right it off yet, what powders and primers are you using.I did'nt have to good of a group until I switched primers and powder out of a encore 204,all the hornady loads would'nt satisfy my groups until I tryed the re 15 with a federal 205 match primer and then became a happy camper,I don't recall ever shooting a group over 1/2 inch at 100 yards.Play with differant powders and primers you might get a surprize I did.

dont log on much but, have a brain thumper with this one. powder h 335 25.6 gr / fed 205 gm. have not recieved the new batch bullets yet but, have got box nosler 32 gr bt lead free. they are longer due to no lead. when i have time will give them a try. i don't look for tack drivers, i don't shoot fly's off walls ( although i have with a pellet gun when was a kid, off my grandpa's shed). groups satisfied with 2-3" @ 125 yds with my marlin 45/70 also with the 30/30 i got fews years back. i always try and get up close and personal with the big game we have in alaska. yukon bull moose, caribou. they are very large targets, tasty too. don't think i've shot more than 150 yds at them.

No. For many years I've carried my 22 hornet along my trap line. It has iron sights on it and works great for dispàtching varmints caught in traps. You cannot dispatch say wolves with a rim fire round in my area. I wanted something that can shoot farther out to 200 yds. So the choice was the 204 ruger. Lynx, fox, wolves and wolverine are what this round is for

Sorry to hear about your barrel. From your post, it looks like you are familiar with the basics of the break action guns. I did get a bad 223 barrel one time and sent it back... my second barrel was much better.. almost swore of Encores altogether. My bad barrel had a misaligned chamber.
Good luck

Have no time now working 6 tens construction. Job on final stretch. Just Sundays off. Last time out, tried pushing back the same nosler 32 gr to load books max COL, h 335 / 25.6 gr- first shot split my scopes cross hairs into 4 strands. Dead on POA cold n clean bbl. Second went low and left. Following shots just spiraled out from there. When cleaning out the barrel notice rifling inside muzzle caked with copper fowling all around and heavier on one side. I never saw anything like that with my marlin 45/70 or the super 16 22 hornet bbl. any suggestions?

the rifling in the 204 ruger appear to be shallow like my micro-groove 45/70. i'm thinking that with soo much copper fouling, it's becoming a smooth bore at the muzzle. the results are flyers after a shot or two. i hope this ain't no one shot wonder.

Fish, I'm having the same problem with my 23" Bullberry Encore. Haven't found the correct load yet to get the sub-MOA groups BB guarantees. I've tried Varmint Grenades up to 40gr Hornady factory loads. Watching this thread with great interest and will let you know when/if I find a load that works.

Honestly, I have all the barrels I want or could ever need..... wait, look, there's another!!

I just got a 24" Custom Shop barrel, and have shot a box of factory Winchester 34 grain hollow points, just to break it in. The last three rounds from the box made a clover leaf pattern where there was just a little paper in between each hole. It was about 5/8 inch. I know it will do better with some handloads, just have not been able to get started at it yet. Got another box to finish break in with. Good luck with your barrel, I am happy with mine.

crubear, i should have time this weekend to pop a few rounds. i'll be trying the same 32 gr nosler at max seating depth from their web site but with slower powder, imr 4064. that and the h 335 powder are the only type i have that i can find powder data on for the 204 ruger. we'll see what happens...
