Hi everyone:
I'm trading a tapered barrel for a heavy one, and am wondering what people think about heavy barrels, both in the extra length and weight, for hunting purposes. I like the 24" tapered, but the barrel I am looking at is a 26" heavy. That extra weight in the field might matter on long elk hunts. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Been working up loads all summer for the 26" 35 Whelen, my 28" '06 hasn't been to the range and probably won't get hunted with this year since I got the Whelen. I think a heavy 26" '06 barrel would be a joy to shoot.
As far as recoil goes, I take most of that away from the gun with my hands. The only thing I have found that I dread shooting is 3 1/2" turkey loads in a 12 ga pump shotgun.

Barrel weight does more for soaking up recoil and stopping muzzle jump than anything else. The Encore is nice because the action doesn't weigh much and is short. Because of this, you can have a longer barrel and still have a normal overall length. It will also give you higher velocity in certain cartridges depending on what powder you are using. I know in the 06 a 26" barrel will shoot faster than shorter barrels when using 4350 and 180 grain bullets. I'm sure other bullet weight would have an advantage with the longer barrel. It's about 60 to 80 fps faster. 26" is the longest I've worked with in the 06s.

I want use anything but 26" heavys because the 24" tapered will not stay true with heavy repetted use of the gun. I have had 2- 24" barrels and they will not stay on target after 6 shots and that will not do in long range shooting. The 26" heavy stay on target and the groups get tighter the hotter the barrel gets. We shoot 300 to 400 rounds evertime we go to the range and the heavy out shoot the tapered all the time.
