I have had a .357 Max Contender for many years but just purchased a new Encore in .50 cal black powder.
I'm looking to purchase a deep woods/swamp gun with expected max range of 100 yards or so. I don't have bear where I hunt but on more than one occasion I have seen hogs over 400 pounds.
45-70 would work, as would many other calibers, but my main question is barrel length and type.
I was thinking about a 24" MGM barrel but Mike Bellm, who has already been a lot of help (thanks Mike!) thinks a 24" barrel is a bit long. A 24" barrel would be equal in length of my Marlin lever action. Standard TC 45-70 is only 20", that seems too short. So a 22 or 24"??
Also, which contour? MGM has 24" heavy contoured barrel, think that is what they called it, in stock but I haven't seen one so I'm not sure about it.
I like the .50 cal black powder which is 28" and is fluted stainless barrel.
What do other 45-70 owners have and your opinions of your choice?
Thanks!
Steve
